HAMMER HEADS

CENTRAL ONTARIO BUILDING TRADES

We’ve teamed up with Hammer Heads, who has been a champion for the West Park Community Benefits project by bringing on quality apprentices. Hammer Heads is a community agency that helps to make important connections between contractors, subcontractors, unions and potential job-seekers in the trades. They not only connect people to job opportunities but also provide essential mentoring support for one year.

This ensures that new apprentices are put on a path for success.  Everyone has a role to play in training and mentoring the next generation of tradespeople to ensure long-term stability in the construction sector.

STEPS to Construction Program

Interning on the West Park construction site, Nicholas Robb is EllisDon’s first participant from the Toronto District School Board’s STEPS to Construction Program that provides an opportunity for youth to access a career in the trades.

A member of West Park’s community benefits working group, TCBN is a grassroots organization that envisions Toronto as an inclusive, thriving city in which all residents have equitable opportunities. Several members of TCBN’s NexGen Builders mentorship program are placed at West Park.

West Park’s Construction Site is Transforming Lives

In December 2018, a Community Benefits and Apprenticeship Declaration was signed pledging to provide training and employment opportunities for underrepresented or disadvantaged groups through the construction of West Park Healthcare Centre’s new six-storey facility.

Fast forward three years, the commitment is coming to fruition with apprentices in different fields working diligently at their trade on the West Park campus.

“The construction of our new hospital is transforming one life at a time for apprentices and journeypersons looking to access meaningful work opportunities,” said Anne-Marie Malek, West Park’s President and CEO.

As a major employer located in one of Toronto’s priority neighbourhoods, these opportunities significantly increase their chances for stable, well-paying jobs in the future, which can positively impact lives and families for generations to come.”

With the official signing of the declaration by industry leaders, West Park became the first Ontario hospital to include a community benefits agreement in its capital project, requiring EllisDon to meet an aspirational target to provide 10 per cent of all trade and craft working hours, on a trade-by-trade basis, to be performed by qualified apprentices or journeypersons from historically disadvantaged communities or equity seeking working groups.

These groups include black, indigenous and people of colour (BIPOC), newcomers to Canada, women, at-risk youth, persons with disabilities, veterans and individuals who identify as 2SLGTBQ.

In addition to West Park, EllisDon Infrastructure Healthcare, Central Ontario Building Trades (Hammer Heads), Infrastructure Ontario, Toronto Community Benefits Network (TCBN) and the United Way Greater Toronto are also signatories of the declaration.
